Our first destination today is Vestkapp, a place we have visited several times before, though it is often foggy. When we left Briksdal, the sun was shining and there was no sign of fog. Even about 10 kilometers before reaching our destination, the weather was still fine. However, upon arrival at Vestkapp, it suddenly became cold and foggy—even in July.

We warm up with a cup of coffee before continuing toward our destination for the day: Runde Island, also known as the Bird Island. As we leave Vestkapp behind, the weather improves minute by minute. By evening, we arrive on the island.

Runde Island lies southeast of the city of Ålesund. It is reached via several bridges, and we ride to the end of the paved road. There we find a campsite with many motorhomes, but also space for tents. Runde has around 170 residents living in two small villages, Runde and Coksøyr. The island is mountainous with steep cliffs up to 300 meters high, providing ideal nesting sites for more than one million seabirds. It is one of the few islands in Norway that was not covered by ice during the last Ice Age. All around us, the sounds of birds fill the air. The highlight of the island is the puffins. In the evening around 8 PM, we set out to hike to the opposite side of the island. Many other visitors join us on the trail. After about 45 minutes, we reach the cliffs where the puffins nest. We join other visitors who are already waiting with their cameras for the perfect shot. The birds come as close as two meters—if you stay quiet. This hike is highly recommended for any Norway trip. The next day, we decide to join a boat tour offered at the campsite. Small fishing boats, converted for tourism, circle the island. The ride can be quite rough, but the scenery and birdlife more than compensate. Tip: When walking on the island in the evening, bring a stick for protection, as skuas also nest here and may attack if you get too close to their nests.
