Southern Norway Bike Tour

Map of the motorcycle route through Southern Norway showing fjords, coastal roads, and key stops (2021 itinerary)
The motorcycle tour is approximately 2,800 km long and takes 11 days, including ferry travel on the first and last days.

Norway is part of the Schengen Area. If you are entering from another Schengen country (e.g., Denmark), there are usually no fixed border controls. However:

  • A valid passport or national ID card is required.
  • Random border checks may still take place.
  • Customs rules apply for goods such as alcohol, tobacco, and cash limits.
  • EU/EEA citizens can stay in Norway visa-free for up to 90 days.
  • You may be asked to show proof of purpose of travel and sufficient funds.

Overall, entry is generally smooth and uncomplicated, but standard Schengen and customs regulations still apply.

Short description:
Our journey begins in Denmark in Hirtshals, where we take the ferry to Kristiansand in Norway.
From there, we head north via the Kanzelfelsen viewpoint. Continuing toward Bergen, we follow the fjords and visit a glacier that reaches down into the valley.
The northernmost points of our route include Vestkapp and a stunning bird island.
We then continue via the Geiranger Fjord to Spiterstulen. After a hike in Norway’s mountain wilderness, the route leads over Vøringsfossen waterfall to Lysebotn.
From there, another hike takes us to the famous Kjerag plateau before the route returns to the starting point in Kristiansand.
Best travel time:
The best time to travel is July, when the days are longest and most roads are free of snow.
Ferries:
The small fjord ferries do not need to be booked in advance, as they operate at regular intervals throughout the day.
Accommodation:
Along the route, there are many campsites, most of which also offer cabins for overnight stays. Larger towns also have hotels, although they tend to be relatively expensive.
Food and drinks:
If you want to eat reasonably cheaply in Norway, it is recommended to bring a camping stove. Supermarkets such as Rimi can be found in most larger towns and offer affordable groceries. Alcohol and cigarettes are very expensive in the Nordic countries.
