First, we travel along a smaller, straight road through the island's interior; afterwards, we visit a port city. The magnificent marina is well worth a visit—as is the city center, with its steep, narrow alleys and numerous cafés. We then continue our journey, and after a few kilometers outside the city, we turn back into the mountainous terrain of Corsica. Now we ascend a small mountain pass via a well-paved road. Many motorcyclists can be found riding here, and upon reaching the summit, one discovers a small lake.

Beyond the lake, the road leads us back down into the valley for a stretch—a route where herds of sheep frequently claim the road as their own. We also pass a waterfall (a walk of about 30 minutes). We make our way through small villages. Before tackling what is arguably the most famous mountain pass in Corsica, we drive through one last small village—a place that, in the summer, likely hosts ten times as many tourists as it has permanent residents. Crowded cafés can be found everywhere.

In this village, we turn right, and immediately the surroundings become somewhat more secluded again. The wide, winding paved road now climbs to an elevation of over 1,200 meters, passing by the rocky massifs of this region. Up at the pass summit, there is plenty of hustle and bustle; for many hikers, this serves as the starting point for their treks into the 2,000-meter-high mountains. On the other side, the winding road descends back into the valley, where, after a while, we eventually reach the coast. Along the coast, we continue northward for several kilometers until we arrive at our campsite for the night.

Like needles, the jagged peaks of the granite massif rise from the earth. The view into this wild tangle of rocks is truly unique. Situated at the pass summit stands the statue of the Virgin Mary, "Notre Dame de la Neige," surrounded by numerous votive plaques and a sea of candles (a pilgrimage takes place here on August 8th).
